The Theatre Royal, Washington Street, Workington has been the home of the Workington Playgoers for the past 90 years. In that time, its stage has witnessed several hundred performances by Playgoers’ members.

Following the extensive refurbishment of the Theatre Royal in 2016, thanks to generous funding by a number of organisations, to all of whom we are most grateful, the beautiful, Victorian Theatre Royal is equipped to be an exciting venue for live theatre in West Cumbria and a hub of Workington community.

The Playgoers present five performances a year – a Pantomime in February, and then four plays throughout the year long season. You can see several additional shows produced by individuals and companies who have hired our theatre too.

We are an entirely voluntarily run theatre, and Workington Playgoers is a long-established amateur dramatic company providing professional-level entertainment and performance for a very reasonable price.

Workington Playgoers aim to give its members more than just an opportunity to “put on a play”. We want to make the Theatre Royal a regular venue for members to take part in social nights, rehearsed play readings, quizzes and other events for socialising and being a part of The Playgoer’s family.

As a member of the Playgoers you will have the opportunity to take part in our productions in a variety of ways.

If you love acting, the Playgoers can give you with the opportunity to display your talents, to build upon them and learn new theatre skills (for example, through our acting workshops held: keep an eye on our Facebook for more information).

If you have a flair for costume or set building, or perhaps would like to get technical with creating sound and lighting designs, then our Wardrobe Department, Stage Crew and Technical Crew are ready to welcome you! Or perhaps you would enjoy being part of our friendly Front of House Team, greeting the public on show nights, working in the box office, or serving patrons in our lovely new bar area.
