‘In Casablanca in December 1941, a cynical American expatriate encounters a former lover, with unforeseen complications.’
This Black & White film is regarded by many film critics as the best movie ever made – with it’s intricate, heart-breaking plot, it’s many outstanding performances, pacey editing, marvellous musical interludes and collection of quotable lines.
It’s the story of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart); a world-weary, American ex-patriate who runs a nightclub in Casablanca, Morocco during the early stages of WWII. Despite the pressure he constantly receives from the local authorities, Rick’s cafe has become a kind of haven for refugees seeking to obtain illicit letters that will help them escape to America. But when Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), a former lover of Rick’s, and her husband, show up to his cafe one day, Rick faces a tough challenge which will bring up unforeseen complications, heartbreak and ultimately an excruciating decision to make.
With a wonderful supporting cast including Sidney Greenstreet, Claude Rains and Peter Lorre, some memorable musical performances from Dooley Wilson and Madeleine LeBeau and sublime Photography & Lighting, this tense thriller is one of the films that no movie enthusiast should miss when it’s being shown on a big-screen.
