The Theatre Royal, Washington Street Workington has been the home of the Workington Playgoers for the past 80 years. In that time, its stage has witnessed several hundred performances by Playgoers members.

Following the recent extensive refurbishment of the Theatre Royal, thanks to generous funding by Arts Council England and a number of donors, to all of whom we are most grateful, the Theatre Royal is now equipped to become an exciting venue for live theatre and amateur dramatics for all ages, in West Cumbria.

The Playgoers aim to present up to five productions a year at the Theatre Royal, with additional shows produced by its talented Youth Group. As a member of the Playgoers you will have the opportunity to take part in our productions in a variety of ways. If you love acting, the Playgoers can give you with the opportunity to display your talents, to build upon them and learn new theatre skills (for example, through the occasional acting workshops held). If you have a flair for costume or set building, or perhaps would like to get technical with creating sound and lighting designs, then our Wardrobe Department, Stage Crew and Technical Crew are ready to welcome you! Or perhaps you would enjoy being part of our friendly Front of House Team, greeting the public on show nights, working in the box office, or serving patrons in our lovely new bar area.

The Playgoers aims to be more than just an opportunity for its members to “put on a play”. We want to make the Theatre Royal a regular venue for members to take part in social nights, rehearsed play readings, quizzes and other events for socialising and being a part of The Playgoer’s family.
